During my four years of studying sound design, engineering, and technology, I was able to get a lot of experience to prepare me for a career after college. I got to learn about several different aspects of sound, such as equalization, sound distribution, and patching, among many other elements. I was able to apply that education to the shows that were assigned to me during my time at the university. Below, you'll find a list of productions I worked on in college and a description of the kind of work I did for each production.
Sound Designer
More info will be coming soon when the film is released, but I was assigned to work on one of the animated films that would be showcased in my last semester in college. I chose to work on this film because I wanted to challenge myself with a film that had a combination of action, video game references, and car chases.
Sound Designer
More info will be coming soon when this is finished, but the kind of story I wanted to tell through this assignment was something that I felt that I personally would enjoy listening to. For this project, I wanted to create a sound experience that was exciting, immersive, and creative with its sound palette and virtual environment.
Sound Designer/Operator
For this dance production, I had to collaborate with several student choreographers so that we could get their music and sound cues sounding really good for their student dancers, which I had to operate during the performances. This may have been one of my personal favorite experiences at UNCSA because I developed a strong interest in collaboration with other artists to bring their sound vision to life.
Head Sound Engineer/Com Engineer
This was my first production at the university where I had to assemble the paperwork for the sound system and take leadership with setting it up in space. This production really helped me to get comfortable with being the head of a sound team, as I was able to figure out what the sound designer wanted and how to put the system together. By familiarizing myself with the space several times and figuring out the patching in the facility, the team was able to finish the system several days before the deadline.
Sound Designer/Engineer
During Black History Month, I took up an opportunity to operate sound cues and design a microphone/monitor system for a performance celebrating the university's black student artists and their many talents. This experience really helped me to familiarize myself with the elements of designing a theatrical sound system, such as soundboard patching and using different kinds of microphones for musical instruments.
Communication and Video Engineer
My responsibility for this show was to set up the communication system and the video system so that the technical team could talk to each other, and the whole staff could see the onstage performance and the conductor. This job allowed me to familiarize myself more with a com and video system in a theatrical space, and I feel that com system setup has become one of my strongest skills in sound engineering.
Sound Mixer/Boom Operator
During my second year at the university, I got assigned to work on several student film projects, both on-set and during post-production. During filming, I was responsible with operating the sound mixer and the boom mic. During post-production, I had my first experience with doing Foley in film.
